What to do in Kerala? The best state in India!

Kerala, often referred to as “God’s Own Country,” is a lush and diverse state in southern India, known for its tropical landscapes, rich culture, and vibrant traditions. Bordered by the Arabian Sea on the west and the Western Ghats on the east, Kerala offers a unique blend of scenic beauty, from tranquil backwaters and serene beaches to misty hill stations like Munnar.

The state is also famed for its Ayurveda practices, spice plantations, and vibrant festivals. Kerala’s hospitality, warmth, and deep-rooted heritage make it a must-visit destination for travelers seeking an authentic and immersive experience.

It was my third time visiting Kerala, this time invited by Kerala Travel Mart, to cover the event that brings together the finest travel and tourism operators from Kerala and international markets. And, as travel media we were also invited to visited some of the most unique places in the region.

The best places to visit in Kerala

Start your visit in Kochi

If you are visiting Kerala, you will probably arrive in Kochi. Kochi, often called the “Queen of the Arabian Sea,” is a vibrant city that blends history with modernity. As a historic port town, Kochi has been a melting pot of cultures for centuries. Visitors can explore Fort Kochi, with its colonial architecture, visit the iconic Chinese fishing nets, or take a stroll through the bustling streets of Jew Town to see the Paradesi Synagogue. The Mattancherry Palace, built by the Portuguese, and the colorful spice markets add to Kochi’s charm, making it a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts and culture seekers alike.

Stay a Brunton Boatyard, a CGH hotel in Fort Kochi, where you can appreciate a nice pool with a view, a complimentary boat tour during sunset and indulge yourself with delicious local cuisine. At the restaurant Armoury I tried the famous prawns pollichattu, one of my favorite meals in Kerala.

From Kochi, you should definitely go to Munnar.

Munnar is a picturesque hill station located in the Western Ghats of Kerala, India, renowned for its sprawling tea plantations, mist-covered hills, and cool climate. Nestled at an altitude of around 1,600 meters (5,200 feet), Munnar offers breathtaking views of lush green valleys and is home to rare wildlife, including the Nilgiri Tahr in the nearby Eravikulam National Park. The region is also known for its charming colonial-era bungalows, scenic trekking trails, waterfalls, and vibrant flora, making it a popular destination for nature lovers and adventure seekers. You will not want to miss the tea plantation.

In Munnar you should definitely consider staying at Vibe. The newly opened 5 star resort, offers stunning panoramic views of the mist-cloaked mountains, spacious accomodations with possibility to have your own jacuzzi with a view to the mountains or even your own vila with a private pool.

Munnar to Thekkady

Thekkady is a renowned wildlife destination in Kerala, famous for the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, where visitors can experience the rich biodiversity of the region through boat safaris, nature walks, and bamboo rafting. Thekkady is surrounded by lush forests, rolling hills, and spice plantations, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts. Visitors can explore the spice gardens, learn about Kerala’s agricultural heritage, and witness wildlife like elephants, bison, and various bird species in their natural habitat.

Perched amidst the spice-scented air, this resort is a celebration of Kerala’s agricultural heritage. Staying in the cozy cottages made from local materials, I felt a deep connection with the land. The evenings, with campfires crackling, were an invitation to share stories, while the mornings greeted me with birdsong and the earthy aroma of cardamom and cinnamon. You will definitely want to wake up for the morning yoga session and might even be greeted by the locals monkeys that play around the property.

Thekkady to Aleppey

When visiting Kerala you don’t want to miss the tranquility and beauty of the backwarters aboard of a houseboat. A houseboat, known as a kettuvallam, is a traditional wooden boat converted into a luxurious floating accommodation. These houseboats are most commonly found in the backwaters of Alleppey and Kumarakom, offering a unique way to explore Kerala’s tranquil waterways, lush paddy fields, and village life. Equipped with modern amenities, these houseboats provide a serene travel experience with onboard meals made from fresh local produce. Guests can relax, take in the views, and enjoy the slow, peaceful rhythm of Kerala’s backwaters.

For an amazing and confortable experience at the backwaters, I would definitely recommend Spice Routes houseboats. These luxurious, traditional kettuvallams glide through the winding canals of Alleppey, revealing the slow-paced life of Kerala’s villages. As you float past lush paddy fields, swaying palms, and water birds, you’ll be treated to onboard meals made with fresh local ingredients. The combination of stunning scenery and the comfort of these houseboats offers an unforgettable way to experience the tranquility and beauty of Kerala’s famous backwaters.

From Aleppey to Kumarakom

To end your tour in Kerala in style, you will definitely to want to spend a few days in Kumarakom. Kumarakom is a tranquil village located on the banks of Vembanad Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Kerala, India. Famous for its serene backwaters, bird sanctuary, and houseboat cruises, Kumarakom offers visitors a peaceful escape into nature. The area is dotted with luxury resorts, making it a popular destination for relaxation, Ayurveda treatments, and wildlife enthusiasts. The village also offers glimpses of traditional Kerala life, with its paddy fields, coconut groves, and fishing communities, all adding to its charm as a picturesque retreat.

In Kumarakom I have stayed twice at the Rhythm Resort, nestled by the tranquil Vembanad Lake, which was an experience rooted in harmony. The resort’s eco-conscious design, with villas that blend effortlessly into the surrounding greenery, reflects Kerala’s innate respect for nature. The resort has the largest pool in a resort in India, with an infinite view to the backwaters.

Staying in Rhythm is like living a real life fairytale, you have the swimpooloutside your vila, the sunset’s are t and the evenings are lively filled with traditional music and delicious local cuisine.

Kerala, with its spice-scented air, emerald landscapes, and warm-hearted people, is a destination that doesn’t just capture your attention—it captures your soul. As I packed my bags to leave, I knew I wasn’t saying goodbye; rather, I was leaving a part of myself behind, in the hills, backwaters, and hearts of this extraordinary state but also bringing the most serene and magical energy from this unforgatable visit.
